Argent 25 Series – Network/Server Rack Guide

Some key items to consider when selecting your Australian designed and manufactured Argent 25 Series Rack

Height

The height of the rack is expressed in the number of available rack spaces.

Argent offers standard height and custom heights on the 25 Series. Argent has designed and manufactured 25 series server racks that are 52 RU high. This provided the client with 25% more rack space that they could offer to their collocation customers. The height of the rack is one of the most important considerations because it determines how many rack spaces are available for your equipment. Please consider the external height dimensions to make sure the rack will fit through the doors in your facility.

Common heights for floor-standing racks and rack enclosures are 42U, 45U and 48U. Keep in mind when determining the height that you may also wish to leave extra space for horizontal cable managers, future expansion or other purposes.

Width

The Global EIA-310-E standard width for server racks is 19 inches (yes, it is inches). By far the majority of rack mounted IT equipment is designed for that width, but it is worth checking.

External cabinet width is very important. Standard size for removable floor tiles in a raised-floor data center is 600mm. Argent has 600mm wide server racks.

Provided you have the floor space, extra width is a great option. This space can accommodate PDUs, high-density cabling and cable managers without obstructing airflow. This is especially helpful for network switches that have side-to-side airflow and forward-facing ports. Argent server racks with additional width can allow for vertical mounting rails that include built-in cable channels.

A popular accessory for your extra cabling requirements is the Argent Cable Corridor ( https://argent.com.au/product/cable-corridor/ ). Designed and manufactured in Australia for improved cable access and management.

Depth

The rack’s depth is important because you need to make sure it will be deep enough for your equipment, including any cabling that extends past the equipment cabinet. You can usually adjust the depth of the vertical mounting rails in a four-post rack or rack enclosure, but only within certain limits. In our experience 1000mm is a common depth. Argent also manufactures racks that are 600mm, 800mm and 1200mm deep. The extra depth ensures that there’s enough room for cabling, PDUs, cable managers and other accessories without blocking airflow or compromising serviceability.

Static load

Argent 25 Series static load recommendation is up to 1000 kgs. Remember that you also need to make sure that your facility’s floor can support the weight of the rack and any equipment installed inside it. Argent has designed and manufactured racks with load ratings for specific applications. If necessary, Argent can arrange for third party load simulations during the rack design and planning phase.

Doors

A perforated single front door is the most popular option and is the standard door on the Argent 25 Series rack. The Argent door design provides a perfect blend of open area for maximum air flow, and structural door integrity. Argent 25 Series rack front door locks on 3 points for higher security. A feature of the Argent front door design is that it can be removed without using any tools. The standard rear door configuration on the Argent 25 Series is split or “barn” doors. The split doors require much less floor space when open, compared to a single door. If a door is not necessary, then just let Argent know. Argent is the manufacturer of the rack and that cost saving of removing a door will be passed on. Polycarbonate window doors are another option. The trade off for equipment visibility with the window, is reduced air flow

Side Panels

Floor-standing rack enclosures can be configured with or without side panels. Modular side panels that are split into two pieces on each side make it easier to service the rack enclosure. Side panels without vents can improve cooling efficiency. They prevent hot air from recirculating through the sides of the rack and maintain direct front-to-rear airflow.

Top panels

Argent 25 Series top panel has inbuilt cable access. Brush strips are factory fitted. This allows cables to pass through into the rack, without compromising rack air flow. The Argent designers have included an easily removable top section that can be used to add ventilation fans, or other top panel mounted accessories.

Levelling feet and wheel options

The Argent 25 Series server rack includes leveling feet. Argent can fit castors if mobility is required. There are generally two types of mobility requirement and two different types of castors. If the rack is only going to be moved to the operation location once, then a simple low cost castor should be sufficient. If there is the possibility of multiple rack movements, Argent can fit a more robust castor that is suited to that application.

Locks

Argent 25 Series rack doors have keyed locks with swing handles included. Specific locks can be factory fitted by Argent.

Colour

Argent does 100% of the rack design, manufacture, painting, assembling and packaging. Argent black is the most common colour, but white is a great option. The white Argent 25 Series rack has increased visibility, reduce lighting requirements and can reduce energy costs in large installations.

PDU’s

Argent offers a range of PDU’s. There is a vast number of options when considering PDU’s. Different outlet options, different colour options. Australian made or imported models with built in intelligence systems. They can also provide features like current monitoring, remote management, automated alerts and individual outlet control.
