Why Australian-Made Server Racks Matter: Supply, Security and Support
Supply certainty, security and local engineering support: why Australian-made server racks matter for government, defence and critical infrastructure.

Server racks are easy to overlook. They don't process data or route packets. But every server, switch and patch panel in a facility depends on them for structure, security, airflow and cable management. For government, defence and critical infrastructure, where the rack comes from matters more than many buyers realise.
Racks are infrastructure
A rack is installed once and expected to last through several generations of IT equipment. It may have to carry heavy loads, meet security requirements, fit an awkward room and integrate with power and cooling systems. Treat it as infrastructure: specify it properly, and choose a supplier who'll still be there to support it.
1. Supply certainty
Recent years have shown how fragile international supply chains can be. When racks are made overseas, delays at port, shipping disruptions and minimum order quantities can derail a project timeline.
Argent racks are 100% designed, fabricated, painted, assembled and despatched in Sydney, with all key processes on site. That means:
- Local delivery: racks are delivered from Sydney
- Flexible scheduling: production is planned locally around your program
- Changes mid-project: if requirements change, the factory can respond
For program partners, Argent offers a Project Delivery Guarantee Program for critical delivery dates (FAQ).
2. Security and traceability
For government and defence facilities, security equipment needs to come from a known, accountable source. Argent holds approval for SCEC Class B and Class C security server racks. Argent is an approved security equipment manufacturer, and our 50 Series racks were SCEC endorsed in June 2016 (details). 50 Series racks are individually serialised and name-plated, with a registry record.
Local manufacture also makes traceability simpler. You know where your rack was made, by whom and under what quality system.
3. Customisation without compromise
Real projects rarely match a catalogue exactly: an extra cable entry, a non-standard depth, a different colour, a dual-compartment layout. When the factory is overseas, customisation is slow and expensive. When it's in Sydney, it's routine.
Argent can customise racks for specific projects. Examples include powder coating in custom colours on our in-house line, and a SCEC-compliant cable entry baffle system designed within 24 hours to give a defence contractor's rack 18 cable entry ports (case study).
4. Engineering support in your time zone
When something needs solving, you want to talk to the people who designed the product. Argent engineers work with clients before manufacture, so racks integrate into existing setups without disruption. Drawings and 3D models are available for sign-off before production.
5. Quality you can audit
Argent is certified to ISO 9001:2015, with third-party audits, and racks are QA tested in the factory before shipment. For organisations such as Sydney Trains, which runs its Rail Operations Centre on Argent racks (story), consistent quality is non-negotiable.
Argent and OPIE Manufacturing Group
Argent has designed and manufactured server racks in Australia for more than three decades. Argent is now a division of OPIE Manufacturing Group, a family-owned Australian manufacturer established in 1962. As part of OPIE, Argent racks are made at Emu Heights in Western Sydney using:
- TRUMPF fibre laser cutting
- CNC press brakes, including robotic press brake automation
- Robotic and conventional welding
- In-house powder coating
- Assembly and QA under one roof
OPIE's investment in automation means Argent can deliver the precision of a specialist rack maker with the capacity of a larger manufacturer.
Frequently asked questions
Are Argent racks more expensive than imported racks? Compare whole-of-project cost, not just the unit price. Local manufacture can reduce freight, delay and rework costs, and customisation doesn't need minimum order quantities. Argent reviews every request on its merits, and no job is too small or too big.
Is there a minimum order? No fixed minimum. Argent works with customers to produce an equitable result for each request.
Can Argent match an existing rack fleet? Often, yes. Send us details of your existing racks and we'll advise on compatible options.
What warranty applies? Argent racks come with a fully backed manufacturer's warranty on factory-made products. Ask Argent for the warranty terms that apply to your order.
